  1. Hi Pardeep, thanks for the detailed reviews, very helpful and filled with insights.
I use my wife’s HDFC regalia card regularly for everything. Looking to get one in my name now since moving from Citibank to some other bank for salary account (not yes decided which one but thinking of going for HDFC).
Looking for suggestions on cards for 4 key things
    1. Regular usage of Amazon for shopping
    2. Grocery shopping from DMart
    3. International and domestic points and free lounge access
    4. Fuel cash back or points

What would be your recommendation on which card to apply? I have really good cibil scores and banks generally do not refuse me because of the salary amount coming in

    Thanks,
    mB

  2. Hello Pardeep,

Thanks for the nicely compiled article. I found your article in 2018 for the first time, and since then I had kept it as a bookmark to come back to when I would apply for a credit card.

Can you help me with my first credit card?

I have joined my job recently, and I am getting an HDFC Diners Club Black credit card and HDFC Diners Club Privilege credit card, both free for life as a promotion.

Also, HDFC is giving me a free lifetime Millenia card.

Which one should I opt for?

While looking at the benefits, I think I should get a set of 2-3 cards, each for separate benefits.

A little about me, I am a consultant, so travel is given, and I want flights, lounge access, and fine dining benefits, hence considering HDFC Diners club black. But I also want cashback and other benefits on online shopping and grocery shopping at Dmart, BigBazaar, or other retail stores.

Kindly suggest the card or set of cards for me. Waiting for your suggestions.
    Thanks..

    • I would suggest you to check the HDFC Infinia credit card as well, in the same segment of HDFC Diners black credit card. Infinia credit card offers food benefits on addition to Diners black credit card.

FOr retail stores, you can go to Standard Chartered Manhattan credit card for 5% cashback with a limit of Rs 500 per month.

  4. I have been holding the SBI Prime card for some time.
I have also had the Priority Pass issued for this card.

Now, I plan to move abroad for sometime for work.

Does it make sense to continue holding this card paying the annual fee without much usage, just so I can use the priority pass for international lounges and the card itself for domestic lounges?

My international travels could be very less, and my lounge usage also could be very low.
So I am inclined towards cancelling this card or downgrading it to Simplyclick.

  5. Hi,

Thank you for the knowledge you share.
What about the axis ace credit card.
Is it still the king of cashback credit in its category?
Is there any credit card better.
Please help with the eligibility as well.

    Reply
    • Axis ace credit card is good in 2 scenarios

1 – Making utility bill payments on Google Pay, you will get 5% cashback

2- None of your other credit cards offers more than 2% reward value on your spending.

  6. SBI SimplSAVE changed it’s reward pattern. Wherever we get 10 rewards for spending 100/- rupees, With effect from 01 Mar 2022, we will earn 10 Reward Points for spe6 Rs 150.

So, which results closing of many Simply Save cards issued by Master Card.

Note: From past 6 to 8 months SBI pushing it’s old customers towards SimplyCLICK card by giving pre-approved offer.

  7. Pradeep, I already have an HDFC Diners Card. But it does not work at some of the places like Dmart, etc. So, I want an additional credit card to go along with my existing Diners Card. Lifetime Free Card with no minimum transaction commitments is preferred. Please suggest.

    Reply
    • You wouldn’t get the cashback benefit as of HDFC Diners card on the Free credit cards.

You can check the HDFC Infinia credit card which provides more or less similar benefits. If you like then you can request to change your Diners card to HDFC Infinia card.

  8. Hello SIr,

Is there any way to apply and get basic credit cards from Foreign banks like Citi, Amex & HSBC ? other than Indian banks.

Current annual Income less than 3 lakhs.

    Reply
    • These banks have common eligibility criteria like minimum 5 to 6 lakh income, living in tier II or tier III cities.

You can try to apply for their basic card.

Currently, Amex is not accepting new card issue applications as per RBI guidelines.

  9. Dear Sir please guide me for the best credit card by following points.
    PS:
1- I don’t spend much (less than 1 lakh/year) but wants it to have good cibil.
2- Mostly i buy things on EMI’s as i have to keep a large amount for my family.
    3- In hand salary – 3 lakh.

    Reply
    • You can get approval for a basic credit card. I would suggest you to apply with your existing savings account bank.

Only apply for a credit card if you will clear all your credit statement dues before the due date.

Never opt for pay minimum and carry forward the balance. Otherwise, you will end up paying high interest up to 48% and your CIBIL score will also hit badly.

  10. Hi Pradeep
I would be buying gold from tanishq ranging amount from 5 to 8 lacs.
Can you recommend me a credit card through which i can make payment and earn great reward points that can be coverted to cash or used for international travelling.

    Reply
    • First, check if Tanishq charges a card transaction fee on credit cards. if they do, then there are only a few credit cards like standard chartered Ultimate card or HDFC Infinia credit card that can provide any benefit after adjusting transaction cost.

Moreover, can you suggest a card best for International usage(International Currency).

  15. PayTM started charging 2% on topping up from credit cards while keeping no charges on top up from debit cards or netbanking.
Is it still viable for points when charging 1000 INR 4 times a month?

    Reply
    • You can use other wallets or you can make 4 transactions at any place. If you do it on Paytm then you would need to pay Rs 80 and you would get rewards points approx value Rs 400 which is still a good deal.

Inspired by your blog I called SC CC and got my SC Manhattan card to Ultimate Card. CC agreed instantly because my Manhattan Card had 5 lakhs limit.
I will have to pay 5k as joining fees but I will get 6k rewards points each equal to Rs1.
Renewal also similar pay Rs5k get 5k points worth Rs. 5k

  16. Hi,

Firstly, thanks for the informative article.

I have been using the HDFC Jet Privilege World credit card for a long time and also the AMEX Platinum Travel since Jan (used the Amex Gold before that). Most of my spends happen on CC. My monthly salary is greater than 2.5L so I am looking to replace my HDFC card with a super premium card For super premium, I am looking at HDFC Diner’s Black but I don’t want to rely only on an Amex and a Diner’s card and would like to have one Visa/Mastercard option as well. What Visa/Mastercard would you recommend for annual spends of about 6-8 lacs?

    • No card would provide family access to lounges.

The recommended way is to apply for add-on cards for your family, and they will be able to share the lounges. If you have a quota of 4 lounge access per quarter then the quota would be shared within your add-on cards.

I also use one another way:
I have many cards that have free lounge access. When I travel with a friend who does not have a card with lounge access then I ask the lounge guys to swipe my card. Even if both of cards are issues on my name, the lounges allow the friends and family. All they want is a valid credit card with lounge access.

      • Hello, I had Citi Prestige card from Singapore which offered unlimited international lounge access using priority pass for primary card holder and a guest. May be they offers same in India too.

  17. Hi Pardeep,
I have joined in a job just three months ago. I wish to get a credit card which would be suitable for getting products from Amazon through EMI. I have a savings account with ICICI bank. Can I go for ICICI Platinum card? Would that be beneficial? and I also want to know if I could get the approval easily for that.

    Reply
    • Yes, you can get easy approval for ICICI Platinum card if you have 3 months salary slip.

The benefits are very low but it’s a good card as your first credit card. Build your credit history and score then apply for second credit card.

Check back CashOverflow blog again to find out which is the best credit card at that time.

  24. Hi Pardeep,
I recently cancelled two of my existing cards – Amex Membership rewards (low acceptability, no airport lounges benefits and low 0.5% cashback) and Standard Chartered Manhattan (recently low rewards and redemption options are seemingly decreasing).

I got Amazon ICICI card, since i spend a lot in amazon, and by far this card offers cashback for purchases. (5% for direct purchases and 2% for wallet reload)

I am planning to get another, premium perhaps, which offers good % rewards. I expect my spends (apart from amazon purchases and amazon wallet online usages) will be around 3-4 lacs per annum. Mostly, I will be spending on foods, shopping, online shopping, travel (flight + hotel).

Please, suggest me an ideal card.

  27. Hi Pradeep, I hold SBI Elite, They did provide only Welcome Benefit but no Renewal Benefit. They wouldn’t waive off annual charges if not through Milestone. Their reward value is so less 0.25 both for catalog and Statement Credit. Can’t even transfer to mikes. Any way to maximize the value? Even it’s a Super Premium Card if SBI, there’s no value for reward and annual charges.

Any better alternative Card like Infinia or Diner’s Black, if these, then which one is best?

  28. Thank You for the list.
I have Amazon ICICI credit Card and HSBC Cashback credit card for my primary usage.
I am planning on getting Amex Membership Credit card next. Is it a good idea? My primary intention is to get cashback for my spends. I don’t travel often.

Also, what did you mean when you mentioned for Amex Card that
(best, if you already have any other cashback credit card. Use it for earning 1000 bonus points worth 400 rupees every month)

  30. Dear Mr. Pradeep,

We would like to apply a credit card for my daily needs like online-offline shopping, grocery, mobile recharge as well as for electricity bills & other credit cards bill.

Note: we have a saving account in ICICI bank and NRE accounts in HDFC & Axis bank.

  31. In case of Standard Chartered Ultimate Credit Card, they give you 5000 reward points on renewal, and value of each point is Re 1. And by the way even SCB Ultimate gives points on loading of wallets So even though the annual fee is Rs 5000, the card is in fact free, except for the tax. Yes Bank First Exclusive Credit Card is also LTF if you have some relation with Yes Bank or if you have Yes First Preferred Card with good spending and want to upgrade. However, they the reward rate of Yes Exclusive is 3 % only for dining, domestic air ticket booking and spends on travel portals. For the rest it is only 1.5 %. In case of HDFC Regalia, the reward rate is only 1.33 % as they give 4 reward points per Rs 150 but value of 2 points = Re 1.

  37. Dear Pardeep,
I use a HDFC Regalia credit card since 8 years, so far so good. But I was told by my colleague that there are better cards with better benefits.
I use credit card for almost all kind of purchases so as to get more reward points accumulated. Also easy to pay the bill as it’s linked to my SB account. Any suggestions of a better card which I could switch to?
    Thanks in advance

Hi pardeep, I hold HDFC regalia first and mrcc card, where I don’t spend much except for fuel ( may be 1.6k monthly ) apart from that I spend here and there online , movies ,gym etc. Am looking for life time free credit card with some good offers . Can you provide me your opinion? Else can I go with the present cards itself?

Also , does our credit score /cibil score gets hurt if we hold more credit cards without using it?

      • Hi Pradeep,

I own a Hdfc regalia card and am being offered Infinia .
Will it make sense to move to infinia ? Most of my spending is on Fuel , Shopping and grocery ~15-20k .

        Reply
        • In general, Infinia is far better than the Regalia credit card but looking at your spending range I doubt if you would get the maximum benefit from the Infinia. As Infinia comes with an annual fee of Rs 10,000 (waived off on spending 8 lakh, but not possible in the current spending structure).

If you don’t have requirements for unlimited lounge access then Regalia is better for you.

          Reply
        • If the upgrade is offered for free and no annual renewal charges. Just go for it.
it’s a far better card and returns are much higher than any card in India.
